How to use the bulk email verifier

Upload an email list
You can verify emails in bulk by uploading your email list as a CSV file. If you’re unfamiliar, a CSV (Comma Separated Values) contains a list of data separated by commas.
As such, you want your email list to appear like the following:

Though your list of contacts likely contains additional data, our bulk email verifier focuses on the email addresses.
Email service providers (ESP) will allow users to download their lists as CSV files. You can also compile your email data within an Excel file and export it as a CSV. If you’re uncertain, check your platform’s help documentation to learn how to retrieve your list.
Then, simply upload your email list using the button provided. Once the upload completes, click verify to retrieve your results from our bulk email validation tool.

Enter a single email address
Alternatively, you can enter a single email for one-off testing. Enter the email address in the appropriate format and click verify to see your results.

Invalid
An invalid email address is any address that does not exist or is no longer in use by a real person. You can receive an invalid result from the bulk email checker if:
- The address does not exist
- There is a typo in the address
- The address does not follow the proper syntax
- The address is no longer in use
- The email domain is inactive
Invalid results lead to bounces. As your bounce rate increases, your email sender reputation suffers. Bounce rates higher than 2% can automatically alert ISPs (Internet Service Providers) and cause them to reject your emails or deliver them to spam.
It’s essential to identify the invalid addresses and make updates if possible. Purge any outstanding invalid results from your email list.

Spam Trap
These are toxic for any email list.
A spam trap is an email set up by a public or private spam prevention service to catch email service abusers. If you scrape websites for lead data or purchase your email lists, you might pick up a spam trap.
Delivering messages to a spam trap has worse consequences than a bounce. Once the anti-spam service identifies you, they can blacklist your address and all other email addresses on your domain.
Once your domain is on a blacklist, ESPs can reject your emails entirely. Stay protected using our bulk email checker for free to stay on top of potential spam traps.

Catch-all
Catch-all email addresses are tricky because it’s challenging to identify if a real person is managing the inbox.
Catch-alls accept every email message that gets sent to invalid addresses on a domain. If you were to send a message to an invalid domain, instead of hard bouncing, the email would redirect to the catch-all address.
Most bulk email verifiers will identify catch-alls as “invalid.” However, every lead has a cost, and some catch-alls are worth maintaining. The ZeroBounce email scoring service can help you grade these catch-all emails to determine which ones you should keep and delete.

Abuse
Abuse emails indicate addresses belonging to persons that abuse email reporting functions.
Rather than unsubscribing from your list, they freely report spam even if the sender adheres to their ESP’s acceptable sending practices.
While these are valid email addresses, abuse emails serve little more than to harm your email reputation. Our bulk email verifier helps you purge these from your lists.

Do Not Mail
Do Not Mail addresses may be valid, but you should avoid emailing them.
These addresses can belong to companies, roles, or individuals. You can further define a Do Not Mail address by one of six sub-categories:
- Disposable
- Toxic
- Role-based
- Robe-based catch-all
- Global suppression
- Possible trap
The bulk email list evaluator will help you determine if you have any Do Not Mail addresses on your list so that you can take the next steps in eliminating them.
